KUCHING: The Sarawak Heart Centre has once again earned international recognition after being named among the Best Specialised Hospitals in the Asia-Pacific Region for 2026 by Newsweek, reinforcing its reputation as a leading public cardiac care institution.
The centre was ranked 52nd in the cardiology category, making it one of the top specialised heart hospitals in the region.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian described the achievement as another proud moment for Sarawak, noting that it demonstrated that world-class cardiac healthcare services are available in the state.
“Ranking No. 52 in Cardiology proves that a world-class public cardiac centre is right here in Sarawak,” he said in a Facebook post.
Dr Sim said the recognition was a testament to the dedication, sacrifices and expertise of the centre’s medical professionals who work tirelessly to serve the community.
“This global recognition is a direct result of the hard work, sacrifices and expertise of our local medical heroes who work day and night to care for our community, giving tens of thousands of Sarawakians another chance at life every year after suffering heart attacks,” he said.
He added that the achievement reflected more than two decades of commitment to excellence, with the culture and values of the institution having been firmly established over the past 25 years.
Dr Sim noted that despite challenges such as limited resources, staffing shortages, and disparities in specialist remuneration, the Sarawak Heart Centre continues to excel and maintain high standards of care.
According to him, the centre remains the only Ministry of Health’s heart institution in Malaysia to consistently appear in Newsweek’s Top 100 specialised hospitals ranking in the Asia-Pacific region over several years.
“This definitely is not mere luck. It is already the fourth year in a row and the result of 21 years of hard work and teamwork,” he said.
The Sarawak Heart Centre, formerly known as Pusat Jantung Hospital Umum Sarawak, is the third public heart centre established under the Ministry of Health and serves as a major referral centre for cardiac treatment in the state.
Dr Sim also thanked the centre’s staff for their dedication and contribution towards placing Sarawak firmly on the international medical map.
“Thank you, Team PJS (Sarawak Heart Centre), for your incredible service and for placing Sarawak firmly on the international medical map,” he said.
