BANGKOK: Sarawak has intensified its preparations for the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games by observing the operations of the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, during a benchmarking visit that ended on Monday (Nov 17).
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Morshidi Fredrick said the visit was aimed at strengthening Sarawak’s readiness as one of the main host states.
He said Sarawak’s success in organising the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) had become an important benchmark for ensuring a strong SEA Games opening ceremony in Kuching in 2027.
“The Sarawak secretariat would ensure all planning adhered to proper financial procedures throughout the multi-state hosting process.
“This is crucial as the 2027 SEA Games would involve Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang and Sarawak working together under one organising structure,” he said.
Morshidi said the benchmarking visit is important since it marks Sarawak’s first experience as a co-host for the region’s largest sporting event.
He noted that cooperation among the Sarawak, Johor, Penang and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) would be central to the Games’ success.
“At the same time, Sarawak looks forward to closer engagement with the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF),” he said.
He added that SEAGF’s role was critical in ensuring compliance with international standards and approving technical requirements.
During the visit, delegates from Sarawak, MASOC, Johor and Penang inspected competition venues across Thailand.
The delegation also attended the Fourth SEAGF coordinating committee meeting held in conjunction with the Games.
The benchmarking mission is set to help Sarawak identify technical, logistical and operational needs for hosting the 2027 SEA Games.
It would also ensure Sarawak’s preparations meet international expectations and run smoothly across all designated venues.
