KUCHING: Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd marked the inaugural World Public Transport Day by reaffirming its commitment to advancing sustainable mobility and strengthening connectivity through modern public transportation systems.
The global observance highlights the essential role of public transport in driving economic growth, reducing congestion, and supporting environmentally responsible urban development in rapidly growing cities worldwide.
Sarawak Metro’s Chief Executive Oficer, Mazli Mustaffa, said the occasion underscores the importance of building efficient, green, and inclusive transport systems for future-ready communities.
“At Sarawak Metro, we are proud to contribute by developing a modern, green, sustainable, and efficient public transport system powered by hydrogen energy,” he added.
He stressed that the initiative aims not only to improve mobility across Kuching but also to enhance quality of life while supporting Sarawak’s long-term environmental and economic goals.
Mazli also noted that Sarawak Metro, as a member of the International Association of Public Transport, remains committed to raising awareness about the importance of reliable public transportation systems globally.
As urbanisation accelerates and vehicle numbers increase, cities are facing mounting pressure to implement efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly transport solutions to meet growing mobility demands.
In Sarawak, the Kuching Urban Transportation System project represents a major step towards transforming urban mobility, reducing congestion, and improving overall connectivity for residents and commuters.
The project aligns with the state government’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, which focuses on achieving high-income status through innovation, sustainability, and inclusive economic growth.
Central to the initiative is the deployment of hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit vehicles, supported by feeder bus services designed to provide seamless first- and last-mile connectivity.
Mazli said the adoption of hydrogen-powered systems positions Sarawak as a regional leader in clean energy public transport, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
World Public Transport Day was introduced by the International Association of Public Transport during the launch of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport in New York on Dec 11, 2025.
The annual observance aims to highlight how public transport connects people to employment, education, culture, and daily opportunities while supporting sustainable urban living worldwide.
