KUCHING: Sarawak State Muaythai Association (PMNS) is pressing ahead with preparations for Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026, undeterred by pending confirmation of competition categories from the host state.
The biennial Games will be held in Selangor from Aug 15 to 24, but detailed guidelines for the Muaythai event have yet to be finalised by organisers.
PMNS president Jumaat Ibrahim said the association has already taken proactive steps to ensure its athletes are competition-ready ahead of the prestigious meet.
“It is understood that Muaythai will be contested at SUKMA 2026, but we are still awaiting the specific requirements, including the categories to be competed in,” he said after the participant and contingent Introduction session for the TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Muaythai Cup and Borneo Cup 2026 at Kuching Waterfront last night (Apr 17).
Despite the uncertainty, Jumaat stressed that PMNS remains unfazed and confident in its preparations.
He noted that the association has a strong pool of athletes whose capabilities have been proven through various domestic competitions held throughout the year.
“As such, we do not foresee any major issues even if there are changes to the competition categories,” he added.
Jumaat also expressed confidence that the organising committee would release the official competition guidelines in the near future.
Meanwhile, he highlighted that the numerous tournaments and activities organised by PMNS this year have contributed significantly to the sport’s growth in Sarawak.
“We are seeing very positive development in Muaythai in the state, with increasing participation and growing interest among the public, largely driven by the competitions held throughout the year,” he said.
Moving forward, PMNS aims to further strengthen the development of Muaythai while maintaining Sarawak’s status as a powerhouse in the sport at the national level.
Jumaat also extended his appreciation to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED), Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), and Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) for their continued support in organising competitions this year.
