KUCHING: Sarawak is strengthening its position in the global energy landscape by accelerating its transition towards renewable energy, with hydrogen emerging as a competitive and viable fuel for the future.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak has no option but to actively participate in the renewable energy sector as global energy dynamics continue to shift amid geopolitical uncertainties.

He noted that while hydrogen was previously considered costly, it is now becoming increasingly competitive with conventional fuels such as diesel.

“Before, many said hydrogen was expensive. But today, with current diesel prices and advancements in technology, hydrogen is already competitive and will become even cheaper in the future,” he said.

He said this in his remarks at the Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) 30th anniversary dinner at Sheraton Kuching on Tuesday (Apr 14) evening.

Abang Johari added that renewable energy sources, including hydrogen and ammonia, are no longer theoretical concepts but are already shaping current economic realities.

“Hydrogen, ammonia, and other renewable energy sources are the concept of the future. Now, they are realities of today.

“People here are talking about alternative energy, but we think it is a reality. We have no other option but to be the players in renewable energy,” he said.

Abang Johari stressed that Sarawak is on the right track in its energy transition, supported by ongoing efforts to expand industrial capacity through the development of the Samalaju Industrial Park II (SIP II).

“To power these new industries, the government has set ambitious targets to reach 10 gigawatts of power capacity by 2013 and 15 gigawatts by 2035.

“This massive increase in renewable and gas-generated energy ensures that Sarawak remains the most competitive destination for global investors,” he said.

He also highlighted the strategic role of Bintulu Port as a key gateway for liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, positioning it at the centre of Sarawak’s energy ecosystem and global supply chain.

At the same time, he welcomed Bintulu Port’s efforts to strengthen international collaboration with strategic partners, including the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), as well as its interest in developing a halal hub to support trade diversification.

“These are important steps in aligning port development with our broader energy and industrial strategies,” he said.

Abang Johari expressed hope that these collaborations would translate into tangible outcomes, including increased investments, improved infrastructure, and new economic opportunities for Sarawak and its people.
