KUALA LUMPUR: Several writers from Sarawak were among the winners at the prestigious Literary Prize of Malaysia (Hadiah Sastera Perdana Malaysia, HSPM) 2021/2022.
The award ceremony was officiated by Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek, who expressed strong support for the role of literature in national development and cultural identity.
“The award-winning works are a reflection of the people’s voice, ideals, and the heartbeat of the nation
“HSPM is not only a platform of recognition but also a foundation for writers to grow and contribute meaningfully to society,” she said during the event at Hotel Zenith Putrajaya on Thursday (Jul 10).
Among the Sarawakian recipients was Zainal Abidin Suhaili, also known by his pen name Abizai, who won in the Poetry (Single Work) category for his poem “Hikayat Esok”, published in Suara Sarawak in 2021.
Jong Chian Lai was recognised in the Youth Literary Book category for his work “Merom”.
Other Sarawak winners under the Single Work category were Aidil Farmi Mohamad for “Pencuri Pakaian”, Lokman Hakim Abdul Wahid for “Gergasi”, Jais Sahok for “Di dan Em”, Nur Azshieldha Sahran for “Nikosa dan Tesla”, and Clariessa Kesulai for “Menenun Kasih”.
The HSPM is Malaysia’s most prestigious literary award, honouring outstanding works in poetry, short stories, novels, essays, and literary criticism published in 2021 and 2022.
Organised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), the award aims to promote high-quality creative writing and encourage the growth of national literature.
Winners received cash prizes, certificates of recognition, and the opportunity for their works to be published by DBP.
