KUCHING: About 50 Scout leaders and Scouts from Kuching, Petra Jaya, Kota Samarahan, Kota Padawan and Betong took part in a one-day seminar on aerial drone safety and skills, organised by the Sarawak Air Scout Secretariat at the Sarawak Scout headquarters here recently.

According to a statement on Monday (July 13), the seminar was conducted by Air Scout Sarawak Assistant Chief Commissioner Jerome Lim, who stressed the importance of responsible drone operations amid the growing use of unmanned aerial technology across various industries.

In the statement, Lim encouraged Scouts to embrace emerging technologies while staying guided by Scouting values of discipline, leadership and safety, noting that responsible flying is the hallmark of a true drone pilot.

“Drone technology offers tremendous opportunities, but every pilot must understand that safety, responsibility and respect for aviation regulations come first.

“As Scouts, we must lead by example in using technology wisely and ethically,” he said.

Participants attended presentations and watched drone flight demonstrations conducted by DJI Drone Kaki Sarawak, which introduced them to aviation safety principles and responsible flying practices.

The seminar also touched on the growing application of drones in sectors such as aerial photography, mapping and surveying, precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, and search-and-rescue operations.

The hands-on demonstrations allowed participants to observe modern drone capabilities while learning about flight planning, risk assessment, and other safety measures required for responsible drone operations.

The programme reflects the Sarawak Air Scout Secretariat’s commitment to equipping young people with future-ready skills while fostering innovation and responsible citizenship through Scouting.
