SERIAN: A major boost in electricity supply capacity here is being expected with a new RM223.25 million substation project, aimed at meeting the area’s growing power demand and addressing existing supply issues.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the 275/132/33kV substation project, which commenced on December 1, 2025, was at 12 per cent completion as of June and targeted for completion by June 30, 2028.
He said the project is an urgent reinforcement to meet the division’s rising electricity needs and supports the wider Serian Master Plan.
He was speaking to reporters during a working visit here on Tuesday (July 28).
Julaihi said the project would provide additional capacity for Serian, Tebedu and Gedong, and would help address existing low-voltage conditions in the area.
He added that the reinforcement’s benefits would also extend to Lundu and into part of Samarahan Division, including Simunjan, in line with development taking place in Gedong.
He said several related substations have also been completed or are under construction around the Serian region, including in Tebedu and Mongkos, bringing the combined cost of these projects together with the main substation to RM260 million.
Julaihi said the project is fully funded by the Sarawak government through Sarawak Energy, and implemented by its subsidiary SESCO, and would also support Serian Division’s longer-term development as a tourism destination.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem, Kedup assemblyman Datuk Martin Ben and Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus.
