SIBU: Over 1,000 delegates will gather in Sibu from Sept 9 to 13 for the Malaysia Pastoral Convention 2026 (MPC2026), bringing together representatives from all nine dioceses and archdioceses in Malaysia for a historic national Catholic gathering.
Hosted by the Diocese of Sibu, the convention will be held mainly at Kingwood Hotel and Sacred Heart Cathedral, with bishops, clergy, religious, lay leaders and faithful expected to participate in prayer, fellowship, reflection and discernment on the pastoral direction of the Catholic Church in Malaysia.
Bishop of Sibu Rev Joseph Hii Teck Kwong in a statement said the event marked a historic moment for the Church as representatives from all nine dioceses and archdioceses would gather in one place for the first time.
“The Convention will be a significant occasion of unity, faith and shared mission,” he said.
He said Sibu was chosen as the host city because of its welcoming people, rich cultural heritage, diverse culinary traditions, economic significance and suitable facilities.
Hii said the convention would also provide an opportunity for delegates to experience Sibu’s cultural heritage, local traditions, cuisine and community life, as it would take place concurrently with the Borneo Cultural Festival.
The gathering is expected to benefit the local economy by supporting the hospitality, food and beverage, transport, retail and tourism sectors, while showcasing Sibu as a potential destination for future national and international conventions.
The convention is supported by Business Event Sarawak, which is promoting Sibu as a destination for business events.
Two major processions involving the delegates will also take place during MPC2026.
On Sept 9, about 1,000 delegates and an estimated 2,000 local Catholic parishioners are expected to gather at Sibu Gateway, bringing the total attendance to about 3,000 people.
Following the celebration, participants will proceed on foot from Sibu Gateway to Kingwood Hotel between 9pm and 10pm.
A second procession will be held on Sept 12, with delegates walking from Kingwood Hotel to Sacred Heart Cathedral between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.
Hii apologised in advance to motorists, residents, businesses and members of the public for any temporary traffic congestion, delays or inconvenience caused by the processions.
He urged the public to be patient and cooperative, while motorists were encouraged to avoid the affected routes where possible or allow additional travel time.
“We humbly seek the patience, understanding and cooperation of the public during these brief periods,” he said.
Hii also expressed appreciation to government agencies, local authorities, security and emergency services, volunteers, Business Event Sarawak and the people of Sibu for their support in facilitating the national gathering.
He said the Diocese of Sibu looked forward to welcoming participants from across Malaysia and hoped MPC2026 would strengthen faith, friendship and unity within the Catholic Church and the wider community.
