SIBU: The Sarawak State Muaythai Association (PMNS) has continued its grassroots development efforts with the launch of the Sibu Amateur Muaythai Challenge 2026 here yesterday (June 12), attracting 120 participants from Malaysia and Indonesia.

Organised by PMNS in collaboration with the Sibu Muaythai Association, the tournament received approval from the Malaysian Sports Commissioner and support from the Malaysian Muaythai Association (PMM).

The two-day event is also fully supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC).

An athlete and club introduction session was held on Friday evening (June 13), attended by Sibu Municipal Council deputy chairman Abg Kamalludin Ang Hamdan, PMNS president Jumaat Ibrahim, Sibu Division Muaythai Association president Tan Eng Chung, Malay Club of Kampung Nyabor (MUC) Sibu chairman Anuar Taha, as well as SSC representatives Alexander Sirai and Mikar Changgan.

In his speech, Jumaat said the tournament reflects PMNS’ ongoing commitment to strengthening muaythai, a sport that continues to gain popularity among youths in Sarawak.

He said the event serves as an important platform to identify and nurture new talent capable of representing Sarawak at both national and international levels, while ensuring the state remains among the region’s leading muaythai forces.

“We welcome the support of muaythai associations throughout the state that are willing to work with PMNS in organising programmes such as this.

“We will continue these initiatives because they provide an important pathway for developing more athletes with the potential to represent Sarawak,” he said.

Jumaat added that the tournament also helps promote Sibu as a sporting destination, particularly among visitors from neighbouring Indonesia.

He also expressed his appreciation to all parties involved, especially KBS and SSC, for their continued support in advancing the sport in Sarawak.

The introduction session was enlivened by performances from three martial arts groups, including Perguruan Mayang Mengurai Sarawak and a special appearance by Pusaka Borneo from West Kalimantan.

Earlier in the day, Sarawak athlete Aman Koboi conducted an interactive “Let’s Try Muaythai” programme for participants and members of the public.

Competition action continued throughout Saturday across various categories, with the official opening ceremony scheduled to take place later in the evening.

Participants, officials and guests pose for a group photo during the opening of the Sibu Amateur Muaythai Challenge 2026 at MUC Hall, Sibu.
