SINGAPORE: Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik kept their title defence alive after overcoming France’s Toma Junior Popov and Christo Popov in a high-intensity opening-round clash at the Singapore Open 2026 today.

The defending champions overcame a nervy beginning before they secure straight-sets 21-17, 21-15 victory against the Thomas Cup runners-up.

Despite a string of unforced errors gifting the Popov brothers several easy points early in the contest, the Malaysian Olympians remained composed under pressure.

Slightly different from their usual setup, Wooi Yik adopted a more aggressive role around the front and mid-court while Aaron rotated deeper into a defensive backcourt position.

The tactical switch disrupted the French pair’s rhythm and reduced the effectiveness of their return serves, allowing the Malaysians to gradually wrest control of the rallies.

The Popov brothers briefly threatened to take charge in the second set, contesting a narrow lead before Aaron and Wooi Yik raised the tempo with a more direct attacking approach.

Smash after smash, return after return, the Malaysians intensified the pressure and steadily forced the French brothers into errors during fast-paced exchanges.

As the Popov brothers attempted to break down the Malaysians with relentless attacking pressure, Aaron and Wooi Yik’s determination to defend their Singapore Open crown ultimately carried them through the storm.

The national pair eventually closed out the second set 21-15 to seal their place in the next round.

Next up – the Round of 16, as the Malaysians continue their title defence in Singapore.
