KUCHING: A jobless single mother is struggling to make ends meet while caring for her sick seven-year-old son and four-month-old baby.
Wong Yi Fong, 33, who rents a small room at an MJC shoplot with her two children, currently relies on RM400 in monthly welfare assistance as her only stable source of income.
Hope Place Kuching recently visited the family after receiving a plea for help from a concerned member of the public, providing basic food supplies and baby formula.
Wong, originally from Sibu, said she had no family members in Kuching to turn to for support.
She previously earned a living by selling local kuih around the MJC area but stopped temporarily after giving birth earlier this year.
Despite suffering from hypoglycaemia, which leaves her frequently dizzy and occasionally faint, Wong has recently resumed selling kuih from time to time, bringing her two children along as she goes from shop to shop.
Her main concern is her son Austin, who has been experiencing several health problems since he was about one year old, including kidney problems, severe gastric issues and high blood pressure.
According to Wong, Austin sometimes misses school when he becomes too weak or his stomach pain worsens.
With limited income, Wong also struggles to monitor her blood sugar regularly and afford more nutritious food.
“I am alone now, here in Kuching. My two kids are all I have and I’ll do anything to make sure they are happy and safe,” she told Hope Place.
