JULAU: Police here arrested six men at two different areas over the New Year weekend for engaging in cockfighting.
Julau OCPD DSP Andam Sulin Brayun said the arrests were made in an operation codenamed ‘Op Dadu’ after receiving public information.
“The first raid conducted around 2.15pm on Dec 31 was at the backyard of SK Ulu Entaih in Pakan.
“Four men aged between 70 and 74 were arrested while the rest fled the scene.
“The next day, around 2.30pm, an open area at the Jalan Ulu Pedanum Pakan plantation was raided and two men aged 52 and 64 were apprehended.”
DSP Andam added that 10 live gamecocks, a dead one, two weighing scales, a cardboard box, a white board, two spurs and cash amounting to RM138 were seized.
The case is being investigated under Section 3 (1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1962 and the suspects can be punished under Section 5(3) of the same Act, which carries a three-month jail term and a RM500 fine, upon conviction.
