KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court today (Apr 27) for possessing a scheduled weapon, namely a samurai sword, in a public place in February last year.
Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar sentenced Don Hiroshee Philip, 32, after he pleaded guilty midway through the trial.
According to the charge, he and another individual were jointly accused of carrying and possessing the scheduled weapon while at an eatery at about 1.30 am on Feb 14, 2025.
The offence was prosecuted under Section 7(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries five to 10 years’ imprisonment upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, on the day of the incident, the complainant, a corporal, was on a crime prevention patrol with a colleague in front of an eatery.
During the patrol, they inspected a suspicious vehicle and found a samurai sword under the driver’s seat.
The weapon was immediately seized as evidence.
Investigations revealed that the accused and his accomplice had carried and possessed the samurai sword, which is classified as a scheduled weapon.
The accomplice is currently serving a prison sentence after pleading guilty to the same charge.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid, while the accused was unrepresented.
