KUCHING: Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (Creative Industry and Performing Arts) Datuk Snowdan Lawan has stressed the importance of preserving and promoting kuntau, a traditional martial art, as a vital part of cultural heritage.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of kuntau classes organised by the Sarawak Iban Kuntau Association (SIKAR) at Dewan Siol Kandis recently, Snowdan said kuntau should be embraced as an art form for self-defence, sports, and healthy living, rather than as a tool for violence.
“Kuntau must be preserved and passed on to the younger generation as a source of pride and heritage,” he said.
He also highlighted the various funding opportunities available under his ministry, including the Facilitation Fund and Event Grant, which are accessible via online application.
In support of SIKAR’s efforts, Snowdan also approved a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant to help fund the association’s activities.
The programme saw the participation of 44 individuals aged between nine and 47, who showcased their skills through tactical demonstrations of Spring 12 and Spring 24, accompanied by cultural performances. The displays featured both team and individual performances, reflecting the art’s fast defence techniques, fluid movements, and strategic approaches.
