BINTANGOR: Over 200 individuals representing various Chinese associations under the Meradong District Chinese Federation are participating in the 39th National Chinese Cultural Torch Relay. The torch relay is currently on its way to Kuching, where it is expected to arrive on September 13.

Meradong assemblyman, Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, highlighted the importance of the event, describing it as a symbol of cultural heritage that requires collective effort to light the torch and spread hope.

He emphasised the significance of promoting Chinese culture and its core values, ensuring that this rich heritage is passed on to future generations.

“The Chinese Cultural Torch Relay is a significant event that underscores the unity and cultural identity of the state,” he said when launching the event recently.

The event will culminate in a grand cultural performance at the Kuching Waterfront on September 15.

With the theme “Coexistence of Diverse Cultures Driving National Prosperity,” the relay highlights the importance of cultural heritage and the pursuit of multicultural coexistence.

“This torch relay is more than just a cultural event; it is a celebration of unity, friendship and the shared commitment to preserving and promoting cultural traditions,” Ding added.

Also present were chairman of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia, Tan Sri Goh Tian Chuan, President of the Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations, Datuk Richard Wee, Pemanca Chan Phan Chan, who represented Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii and chairman of Sarikei Division Chinese Association, Guang Chiu Kion.
