KUCHING: A Sri Aman-born diplomat is set to represent Malaysia in Austria following the appointment of Datuk Fenny Nuli as the country’s ambassador to the European nation.

Fenny paid a farewell courtesy call on Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today (June 16) before departing for Vienna to begin her new assignment.

In a Facebook post, Rundi described the meeting as a proud moment as a fellow Sarawakian seeing one of the state’s own appointed as Malaysia’s ambassador to Austria.

“During our meeting, I shared my views on potential areas of cooperation between Sarawak and Austria, particularly in modern agricultural technology, the food industry and downstream commodities.

“I believe her experience and diplomatic network can help create new opportunities that will benefit Sarawak.

“I wish her every success in her new posting and hope she will continue to bring Sarawak’s name to greater heights internationally,” he said.

Fenny previously served as Malaysia’s ambassador to Switzerland, Poland, Thailand, Belgium and Peru before her latest appointment to Austria.

The Sri Aman native is also Malaysia’s first Iban woman ambassador and is regarded as one of Sarawak’s most accomplished diplomats.

Speaking to Sarawak Tribune in a previous interview, she shared how she began her career as a temporary school teacher in Simanggang after graduating from Universiti Sains Malaysia during the 1996 economic downturn.

She later joined the Administrative and Diplomatic Service and rose through the ranks, serving at Malaysia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva before taking on ambassadorial postings across Europe, South America and Southeast Asia.
