KUCHING: The second day of the Stamp Fair held at Wisma Saberkas here saw a wide array of stamp collections, including those featuring the image of James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak.
The fair, which ended on Sunday (March 31), was organised by the Philatelic Society of Kuching Sarawak (PSKS).
Among the attendees was Lawrence H.K. Tan, a local stamp collector who still possesses the original stamp featuring James Brooke.
The 72-year-old retiree, who began collecting stamps influenced by his father, expressed his passion for the hobby.
“I have several stamp collections from various countries, as well as from Sarawak. I also have the original James Brooke stamps.”
Tan noted the ongoing relevance of stamp collecting, noting that people still send letters and use stamps. “The beauty of stamp collecting is that it allows us to learn about different countries and cultures around the world.”
He also hoped that younger generations would embrace stamp collecting as a positive hobby, steering them away from negative activities.
Meanwhile, Richard Thio Sin Pens, 77, a self-employed individual from Singapore, revealed that he began his stamp collection hobby at the age of 6, also influenced by his father.
He echoed Tan’s sentiments regarding the relevance of stamp collecting, especially for those who still send postcards.
“I hope for the continuation of stamp collecting among younger generations,” he said, before suggesting the establishment of a stamp museum for enthusiasts to visit in the future.
Earlier, PSKS secretary Louis Anthony said the main purpose of the fair is aimed to not only promote stamp sales but also to educate the younger generation about the history of Sarawak through stamps.
“In addition to showcasing our culture to tourists through exhibitions, this event features displays of not only stamps but also postcards, currency collections, and envelopes.”
