The state is enhancing its port development through several strategic initiatives in line with Sarawak’s economic growth targets under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi said the establishment of the Sarawak Ports Authority is among the key steps taken by the state government.
“With the establishment of the Sarawak Ports Authority, the state government is undertaking several strategic measures, including the transfer of regulatory functions involving ports in Sarawak,” he said during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

He was responding to a question from Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chuk Pai Ugon on the government’s plans to empower port development in Sarawak.
Majang said the Sarawak Ports Authority would serve as the single regulatory body for all ports in the state, replacing existing port authorities, including Bintulu Port once its official handover from the federal government is finalised.
He added the government is also implementing the corporatisation of port boards in phases to allow ports to operate as commercial entities with stronger corporate governance, operational efficiency, security and financial management.
“The Sarawak Ports Authority will also coordinate and implement an integrated port development plan based on a clustering approach to optimise the role and strengths of each port.
“This is aimed at reducing overlapping functions, strengthening the logistics chain and encouraging the development of hinterland areas surrounding major ports,” he said.
