KUCHING: Sarawak took centre stage in global cancer research today with the launch of the ‘AACR on Campus-Malaysia’ programme, a two-day international education and training initiative at the Waterfront Hotel here.

Co-organised by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, the programme attracted more than 180 clinicians and early-career researchers from Malaysia and 15 other countries.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, officially opened the event, underscoring the state’s growing role in pioneering cancer research.

Prof. Dr Cheong Sok Ching, Chief Scientific Officer of CRMY and conference chairperson, highlighted the significance of hosting the programme in Kuching.

“The establishment of the Sarawak General Hospital Phase 1 ‘First-in-Man’ Clinical Trial Unit is a tremendous milestone, demonstrating Sarawak’s capability to conduct world-class clinical research.

“Scientific breakthroughs only matter when they reach the people who need them most. That is why AACR on Campus emphasises implementation science – ensuring discovery and delivery go hand in hand,” she said.

The programme features internationally renowned speakers addressing cutting-edge topics such as cancer immunotherapy, precision oncology, early detection, prevention, and innovations in early clinical trial design.

Sessions include ‘Scholarly Publishing in Cancer Research’, led by Dr Lisa Situ of AACR, and ‘Successful Grantsmanship and Grants Administration’, led by Dr Yixian Zhang, AACR Vice-President of Research and Grants Administration.

A panel on cancer disparities, advocacy and care explored practical strategies to tackle social and economic factors affecting cancer outcomes in Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asian region.

Prof. Dr Elizabeth M. Jaffee, chairperson of the AACR Global Affairs Committee, praised Sarawak’s local focus.

“By nurturing research capacity in Malaysia and the region, we empower scientists to make discoveries that resonate globally while ensuring innovation reaches every community,” she said.

The event also spotlighted the growing biomedical research capabilities of UNIMAS and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, alongside support from the Sarawak Research and Development Council in developing local scientific talent.

Amelia Roziman, the Chief Executive Officer of Business Events Sarawak, described the initiative as a platform of hope.

“‘AACR on Campus-Malaysia’ inspires young researchers to dream bigger and make discoveries that save lives. Its legacy extends beyond the event, touching communities and transforming lives,” she said.
