KUCHING: Sarawakians should remain united in safeguarding the state’s rights and ensuring development benefits every community as they commemorate Sarawak Day tomorrow (July 22), says Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
He said the occasion is not merely a remembrance of Sarawak attaining self-government in 1963 but also reaffirms the state’s identity, unity and determination to shape its future within the Federation of Malaysia.
He said Sarawak’s cultural diversity, mutual respect among races and religions, and inclusive spirit had become the foundation of the peace and stability enjoyed today.
“The ‘Sarawak First’ principle is not a political slogan but a commitment to always place the interests, rights and welfare of Sarawak and all Sarawakians above partisan politics.
“It is about ensuring that every decision made, every policy introduced and every negotiation undertaken serves the best interests of our people,” he said in a statement today (July 21).
Yap said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had consistently safeguarded Sarawak’s constitutional rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
He said the state government had also strengthened Sarawak’s economy, expanded educational opportunities, enhanced healthcare and secured greater control over the state’s natural resources.
“These achievements demonstrate what can be accomplished when Sarawak speaks with one united voice,” he said.
Yap said protecting Sarawak’s rights remained a continuous responsibility and called on Sarawakians to preserve the state’s autonomy and multicultural harmony.
He also urged the people to reject divisive politics and instead work together to build a progressive, resilient and united Sarawak.
He expressed hope that the spirit of Jul 22 would inspire future generations to continue building a stronger, more prosperous and confident Sarawak capable of determining its own destiny.
