KUCHING: The state government is targeting to start its mass production of electrolysers to meet the needs of Sarawak.

Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Amar Abdul Aziz Husain said the plan needs to be implemented no later than next year as Sarawak will be producing hydrogen.

“We need to produce hydrogen because it is possible that the Automated Rapid Transit (ART) that will be operating next year requires about two tonnes of hydrogen daily and we need to ramp it up to five tonnes per day.

“So, we need to produce an electrolyser for that and we want to produce it ourselves.
“We don’t want to import from other countries because it will increase the cost,” he told reporters after attending the Toyota Mirai vehicle delivery ceremony to the Premier at Menara Pelita, here, yesterday (Jan 16).

Explaining further, he said SEDC is also working with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) to produce electrolysers using the technology developed by Petronas.

“We can actually do large-scale production like we do now, but currently, it is enough to meet the state’s requirements only. In fact, there are also demands from other countries.

“Therefore, we need to develop the technology better in the coming years, and hopefully we will be able to have a large plant for mass production of hydrogen in Bintulu,” he said.

In July last year, Petronas and SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd, a wholly-subsidiary of SEDC had signed arrangements which covers the supply and operation of Petronas’ propriety Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen that would be delivered to the Darul Hana and Batu Kawa refuelling stations.
