MIRI: A 19-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly filming a woman inside a restaurant toilet in Bekenu, an incident that later went viral on social media.

Miri District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspect was detained less than two hours after the victim lodged a police report over the alleged invasion of privacy.

The incident is believed to have occurred at about 10 am yesterday (June 20) when the suspect allegedly used a mobile phone to record the woman while she was inside the toilet of a restaurant in Bekenu.

The woman reportedly noticed the act and immediately lodged a report at the Bekenu Police Station.

Following the report, police launched an investigation and arrested the suspect in the Bekenu area at about 11.30 am on the same day.

The suspect, a local man employed as a lorry attendant, was also found in possession of a mobile phone believed to have been used during the incident. The device was seized for further investigation.

Police checks revealed that the suspect has no previous criminal record.

Mohd Farhan said the case is being investigated under Section 377D of the Penal Code for outraging decency, an offence punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment upon conviction.

He said police would take firm action against anyone involved in criminal acts and ensure offenders are brought before the courts.

The incident drew public attention after a 28-second video linked to the case circulated widely on Facebook.
