KUCHING: A total of 250 primary and secondary school students in the Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency received school supplies here on Monday.

The Program Ceria Ke Sekolah initiative organised by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is aimed at helping to ease the burden of low-income families ahead of the new school term.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said the programme reflects TNB’s continued commitment to supporting the education agenda and community welfare, particularly for students in need.

“The assistance provided includes basic school necessities such as school bags, stationery, uniforms and shoes,” he said when officiating the programme here.

Fadillah, who is Petra Jaya MP, said the programme has been implemented since 2013 as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to engage with local communities.

“This programme is part of TNB’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and its organisation in Petra Jaya this time marks the first such programme held in Sarawak,” he said.

In a related development, he said the selection of Sarawak for the programme was significant, even though electricity supply in the state falls under Sarawak Energy and Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), demonstrating TNB’s concern for community welfare beyond its operational boundaries.

He added that recipients were carefully selected due to the limited assistance available.

He added that the programme marked a milestone as TNB’s first CSR initiative in Sarawak, made possible through strategic collaboration between TNB, the P194 Petra Jaya Service Centre and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) branches of Tupong, Samariang and Satok.

“The collaboration reflects a collective effort between the corporate sector, elected representatives and the local community in supporting educational development and social wellbeing at the grassroots level.

“I hope programmes like this can be continued and expanded to other areas in Sarawak in the future, in line with the aspiration to nurture a generation of competitive, educated and well-rounded students,” he said.
