MIRI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a tugboat and a barge off Kuala Baram after uncovering suspected violations involving onboard communication equipment and vessel safety documentation.

The vessels were intercepted while anchored about 2.5 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Baram during an enforcement operation on Monday (May 18) afternoon.

Miri Maritime Zone director Captain Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said inspections found the tugboat was suspected of breaching the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 after failing to produce a valid approval certificate for its radio communication equipment.

The barge, meanwhile, was believed to have violated the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for failing to provide vessel stability documents during the inspection.

The two vessels were operated by nine local crew members aged between 23 and 54.

“A detention order has been issued against both vessels pending further investigation by MMEA officers,” Mohd Khairol said in a statement.

He said the agency would not compromise on any violation that could threaten navigational safety or lead to losses at sea.

“Enforcement efforts in national waters will continue to be strengthened to ensure compliance with maritime laws and the safety of all sea users,” he added.

Members of the public with information on suspicious maritime activities or emergencies have been urged to contact the emergency hotline at 999 or the Miri Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 085-649111.
