KUCHING: Canadian men’s singles shuttler Victor Lai could hardly have scripted a better way to win the first BWF World Tour title of his career.

Victor defeated Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in straight sets of 21-19, 21-8 at the Indonesia Open final in Jakarta today to capture a maiden World Tour crown and become the first player from Canada to win a Super 1000 title.

Competing against the home favourite in front of a packed Istora Senayan crowd, Victor showed little sign of nerves as he completed the biggest victory of his career.

The opening game was closely contested, with Jonathan drawing energy from the partisan support as both players traded points throughout.

Victor, however, remained composed during the crucial exchanges to edge the opener 21-19.

Any hopes of a Jonathan comeback quickly faded in the second game.

The Canadian took control from the outset, dictating the pace and forcing a string of errors from the Indonesian before racing to a dominant 21-8 victory.

The triumph earned Victor not only the biggest title of his career, but also prize money of US$101,500 (approximately RM430,000).

The title marks another milestone in what has been a breakthrough period for Canadian badminton.

Last year, Victor became the first Canadian to win a medal at the BWF World Championships after claiming bronze. His historic run included a quarter-final victory over former world champion Loh Kean Yew before a semi-final defeat to world No. 1 Shi Yuqi.

He carried that momentum into 2026 by reaching the semi-finals of the India Open, his first appearance in the last four of a BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament, before becoming the first Canadian in nearly five decades to reach the All England semi-finals.

Now, he has added perhaps the biggest achievement of them all.

Not only was the Indonesia Open his first BWF World Tour title, it came at one of badminton’s most prestigious tournaments against one of the sport’s most recognisable names.

The victory carried additional meaning for Victor, who revealed after the match that Jonathan was among the players he admired while growing up.

“I used to watch him all the time. To be able to play against him is an honour,” he said in a post-match interview with BWF.

That admiration made Sunday’s triumph all the more remarkable.

From watching Jonathan as a fan to defeating him in a Super 1000 final on Indonesian soil, Victor’s rise continues to redefine what is possible for Canadian badminton.

His first World Tour title may have arrived later than expected, but few players can claim their maiden crown came at Super 1000 level — and against one of Indonesia’s biggest stars in front of a home crowd.
