KUCHING: If there was one player who embodied Cape Verde’s dream World Cup debut, it was Vozinha.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper produced a career-defining performance to help the tournament newcomers hold European champions Spain to a goalless draw, earning a historic point against the world’s second-ranked side.

For much of the afternoon, it felt like a matter of when, not if, Spain would score.

The European champions dominated possession, camped inside the Cape Verde half and repeatedly tested the debutants’ resolve.

Yet every time Spain threatened, Vozinha was there.

The veteran denied Ferran Torres after the forward struck the crossbar before reacting quickly to stop the rebound. He later kept out efforts from Fabian Ruiz, Marc Cucurella and Aymeric Laporte as Spain grew increasingly frustrated.

Even the introduction of Ballon d’Or runner-up Lamine Yamal for his World Cup debut failed to change the script.

Yamal brought urgency and excitement, creating danger almost immediately after coming on, but Cape Verde’s resistance remained unbroken.

Behind their captain, the Blue Sharks defended with discipline and belief, refusing to be overwhelmed by the occasion despite facing a team ranked 65 places above them in the FIFA World Rankings.

By the final whistle, Spain had been left searching for answers.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, celebrated a result few had predicted.

The draw may only be worth a point in Group H, but for a nation ranked 67th in the world and making its first appearance at the World Cup, it felt like much more.

And at the heart of it all stood Vozinha – the veteran goalkeeper who turned back the years and delivered a performance Cape Verde supporters will remember for generations.
