From fashion and floristry to event styling and interior design, Orson Liyu has spent more than three decades redefining creativity on his own terms. The multi-talented designer shares his journey of reinvention, the inspirations that shaped his career and the philosophy that continues to guide his work across multiple creative disciplines.
The Evolution of a Creative Mind
The first time I met Orson Liyu was at a fashion design competition in Melaka. He struck me as a well-groomed and charismatic individual with a flawless complexion. Years later, he remains remarkably youthful and continues to be a highly relevant figure in the creative world.
Since the 1990s, Orson has built successful careers in fashion design and styling, modelling, make-up artistry and floristry. Over the years, he has continuously expanded his creative horizons, moving beyond fashion into event styling, interior design for restaurants, homes and commercial spaces, as well as large-scale floral installations that are both striking and inspiring.

What is particularly admirable is his unwavering commitment to creativity. Rather than remaining within a single discipline, he has consistently reinvented himself, moving seamlessly across various creative fields while maintaining a distinctive artistic vision. His journey demonstrates how innovation, adaptability and passion can create opportunities and sustain a long and successful career.
This interview was conducted with the aim of inspiring and educating young people who aspire to enter the creative industries. Through Orson’s experiences, they may gain valuable insights into how creativity, perseverance and a willingness to evolve can help shape future success.
One of the highlights of Orson’s career was serving as image stylist to Michelle Yeoh during the promotion of her role in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies.
“That opportunity was both exciting and rewarding, and it reinforced my belief in the power of styling to create a memorable and impactful image. Since then, I have continued to explore different creative disciplines,” Orson said.
The Interview
Creative Designer, Fashion Stylist, Floral Artist and Event Space Designer. You wear many creative hats. What is the best description of who you are today?
I see myself as a creative designer, someone who is deeply passionate about visual arts and creativity. Everything I do, whether in fashion, floral design or event styling, comes from a desire to create beauty and meaningful experiences.
Do you approach styling a person in the same way you style a space or an event?
Yes. Style and design are about harmony. The right outfit should complement the right venue, and both should work together with the surrounding ambience. Whether I am styling a person or an event, I always look at the complete picture.
Your floral arrangements are often striking and unconventional. What draws you to less traditional forms?
As a designer, I believe in celebrating creativity rather than simply reproducing what is commercially popular. Flowers should reflect the emotions and intentions of the sender. Every arrangement should tell a story and carry a personal message for the recipient.

Event styling seems to be evolving in your work. Are your clients becoming more open to experimentation?
I am very grateful to my clients for trusting me and allowing me the creative freedom to design for them. They understand that my vision is not just about creating something beautiful; it is about creating something genuinely suitable and meaningful for them. That trust allows us to explore new ideas together.
How did your journey into fashion styling begin?
I should thank my father. He was a teacher who never forced me to study in a conventional way. Instead, he encouraged me to appreciate beautiful things and pursue my dreams. He introduced me to wonderful films and music, and those experiences shaped my creative outlook from a young age.
How do you balance current trends with timeless elegance?
It is about resisting the urge to follow the crowd blindly. Timeless elegance comes from understanding what is genuinely good and suitable at a particular moment. It is about making choices based on authenticity rather than seeking approval from others.

What first drew you to event styling and decoration?
I have always loved seeing people dressed beautifully in beautiful spaces, celebrating important moments in their lives. Event styling allows me to bring all these elements together to create meaningful and memorable experiences.
Flowers seem to play a major role in your work. What fascinates you most about them?
Flowers are unique, just like people. They may look similar, but each flower has its own character and individuality. When arranged thoughtfully, they create a special chemistry together. In many ways, flowers reflect humanity itself.
Which event are you most proud of and why?
As a creative designer, I am constantly creating and evolving. I am grateful for everything I have achieved, but I firmly believe the best is yet to come. Growth comes from never stopping learning.

What advice would you give to young people hoping to enter the world of fashion and event styling?
Do not simply copy what you see. Take time to understand why you are drawn to something and how others may perceive it. Design and style are not only forms of self-expression; they are also forms of art that can influence emotions and spread positive energy. Use that power wisely.
When guests walk into an event you have designed, what feeling do you hope they experience in the first few seconds?
I want them to immediately feel a sense of joy and connection, and to celebrate the reason they have come together. I hope they feel free, happy and fully present in the moment, surrounded by a beautifully styled environment that reflects the ORSONLIYU creative vision.
His most recent visit to Kuching was to curate a fashion show. He hopes to return soon and reconnect with the city’s vibrant creative community.
