KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has expressed disappointment over DAP’s misgivings over the proposed increase in Sarawak state seats, describing it as potentially undermining efforts to strengthen the state’s political standing.
In a press statement, he said the proposed increase is a strategic step towards enhancing Sarawak’s representation at both state and federal levels, particularly in advancing the long-standing goal of securing one-third parliamentary representation in line with the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
The proposal to expand state seats is seen as a precursor to broader discussions on parliamentary representation, amid ongoing calls to restore Sabah and Sarawak’s position within the federation.
“It is therefore disappointing that DAP Sarawak appears to take a position that could undermine this broader objective of restoring Sarawak’s rightful representation in parliament,” he said.
Yap said that DAP Sarawak currently holds five parliamentary seats within the federal government, and said the party should focus on fulfilling its manifesto commitments while advocating consistently for Sarawak’s rights and autonomy.
“Instead of opposing or casting doubt on measures that strengthen Sarawak’s long-term political standing, DAP Sarawak should focus on delivering its promises,” he added.
He also stressed that Sarawakians expect accountability and tangible outcomes, adding that the party’s actions should align with the state’s interests and aspirations.
“The rakyat have every right to question whether their actions today reflect the interests of Sarawak,” he said.
Yap called for all parties to support initiatives aimed at strengthening Sarawak’s representation, including potential future adjustments to parliamentary seats, noting that such efforts must be undertaken in good faith.
