MIRI: Police issued 35 traffic summonses after uncovering a range of offences during an overnight operation targeting illegal motorcycle activities and street racing hotspots across Miri.

The operation, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri district police headquarters (IPD Miri), saw officers inspect 37 individuals and 30 motorcycles between 11pm on Tuesday (Jun 2) and 3am today.

Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation focused on several locations known for motorcycle gatherings and illegal racing activities, including Miri city centre, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Marina, Jalan Canada Hill and Jalan Senadin.

He said the enforcement exercise was aimed at curbing street racing, improving road safety and preventing activities that could threaten public order.

Of the 37 individuals inspected, 34 were men and three were women.

Police detected a range of traffic and technical offences, resulting in 35 summonses being issued.

Among the offences recorded were riding without a valid driving licence, illegal modifications to motorcycle structures, modified exhaust systems producing excessive noise, the absence of side mirrors, failure to display registration plates and the use of non-compliant registration numbers.

Mohd Farhan said illegal motorcycle modifications and reckless riding continued to be a concern, particularly when such activities endangered both riders and other road users.

He warned that police would continue to intensify enforcement operations and take firm action against individuals involved in street racing and other unlawful activities on public roads.

“Police will not compromise with any individual whose actions threaten public safety and disrupt public order,” he said.

He also urged road users to comply with traffic regulations and ensure their vehicles meet approved specifications.

Members of the public with information on illegal racing activities are encouraged to contact IPD Miri or the nearest police station to assist ongoing enforcement efforts.

The operation forms part of the police’s continuing efforts to enhance road safety, curb anti-social behaviour and maintain public order in the district.
