KUCHING: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) together with Ministry of Transport Malaysia is looking into improvement to be carried out to enable the Twin Otter aircraft to land and take off with the maximum passenger load of 19 people.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this matter was briefed to the ministry on CAAM’s recent visit together with the secretary- general of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia to Bario, where they were looking into the issues at Bario STOLport.
“Currently, the Twin Otter aircraft is restricted to carrying only nine persons for safety reasons.
“This was a follow-up to the issues brought up by the Ministry of Transport, Sarawak (MOTS) during its visit to Ministry of Transport, Malaysia (MOTM) and CAAM recently in Kuala Lumpur,” he said in a press statement on Friday (March 25).
Lee said the courtesy call by CAAM was to establish a close rapport and strong relationship with the MOTS and the Sarawak government in general.
“The good relationship is vital to efficiently facilitate and resolve issues related to airport and air transportation safety, including regulations in Sarawak.”
He added that the visit was also to make sure CAAM was well prepared to support the state government in the reopening of borders starting April 1.
Meanwhile, CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Chester Voo Chee Soon also conveyed CAAM’s full support to the state government with regard to the development of new airports in Lawas, Bukit Mabong and Bebuling.
Also present were Sarawak CAAM director Sio Yew Hua and CAAM head office senior officer Ivy Goh.
