Woman found dead after vanishing in flash floods

KAPIT: An elderly woman who was reported missing in Long Singut, Balleh during a flash flood on yesterday (Nov 5), was found dead yesterday afternoon.

A flash flood had occurred around 4am on the day of the incident at a longhouse area in Long Singut.

According to a police report lodged, the complainant said the flash floods and strong currents had swept away a farm hut by the river where, the victim and her husband and grandchild spent the night.

The victim’s husband and grandchild managed to save themselves but, the victim identified as Kau Lencau, 57, was nowhere to be found.

Kapit fire station was immediately alerted yesterday morning and a team was despatched to the scene to carry out search and rescue (SAR) deed.

However, in the afternoon, the rescue team was informed by the police that the victim’s body was found by villagers in Sungai Engkirik.

The body was later recovered by villagers and handed over to the police for further action.

It was reported that the team had to travel some nine hours by road and river to reach Long Singut and they headed back to their station after the body was found.
