KUCHING: Marine police detained a local fishing trawler for allegedly carrying out fishing activities along the coast of Pulau Lakei.

Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 said two marine police vessels spotted a boat carrying out fishing activities in the area last Sunday (Nov 27).

The fishing boat manned by five local crew members, including its skipper, committed an offence for fishing in the coastal area of Pulau Lakei, as Malaysia laws prohibit trawlers from any form of fishing activities in coastal areas.

Furthermore, the licence was not under the skipper’s name.

The crew along with the vessel were escorted to the marine police headquarters here for further action.

The case will be investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985.
