Search continues for woman feared drowned in Belaga

The victim is feared to have drowned after attempting to swim across Sungai Tegan to reach a boat.

BELAGA: The search and rescue (SAR) operation to locate a woman feared to have drowned in Sungai Tegan, here yesterday (May 7), continues on today.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department said they received a distress call regarding the incident around 5.30 pm and deployed firemen from Belaga station to the scene.

Prior to the incident at 3 pm, the victim identified as Merry, had been catching fish together with three of her friends along the river.

“The victim then attempted to swim to a boat located across the river.

“She was seen struggling in the water before she disappeared, likely to be swept away by the strong current and is feared to have drowned,” the spokesman said.

The victim’s friends managed to swim to the riverbank where they carried out their own search but failed to find her.

At press time, the search was still ongoing.
