BAU: The district of Bau is set to have its own gallery to preserve its rich cultural heritage and history.

Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep announced the initiative on Facebook on yesterday (Mar 21).

He envisions the gallery to be a space where the vibrant tapestry of life in the multi-racial and religious community of Bau, both past and present, can be vividly showcased through exhibitions and interactive displays for public engagement.

Apart from promoting Bau’s heritage, culture, and history, he said the proposed gallery also aims to create an inclusive space for residents of Bau and provide community reference sources for education and research purposes.

It also aims to establish the Bau Gallery as a regional tourism attraction, leveraging on its historical, cultural, and natural allure and its proximity and accessibility from Kuching.

The proposed location for the gallery is the State Government Quarters No. 6, situated along Jalan Penghulu Durin adjacent to the Bau District Office.

Meanwhile, a first meeting chaired by Bau District Officer Constantine Gerald David Jonas was held on yesterday to identify the next steps towards its realisation.

One of the crucial aspects discussed during the meeting was the selection of a suitable management team or caretaker for the gallery.

The main committee responsible for this task will include representatives from various entities, namely Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Bau District Council (MDB), Public Works Department (JKR), Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), Mas Gading Community College and Bau District Education Office (PPD).

This committee will soon convene to deliberate on funding strategies and design approaches for the gallery.

The exhibit materials will be obtained from various sources, including the Gold Mine Museum and Park Study 2021, Bau District Office, MDB, Bau PPD, Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Bau Branch, Hwa Gong Association Bau, and contributions from the local Bau community.
