KUCHING: Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Sarawak is not only committed to strengthening the national language but also the preservation of tribal languages.

This is in line with the wishes of the Sarawak government, said DBP Sarawak Branch Director Abang Haliman Abang Julai.

“We are also working on a project involving tribal languages in Sarawak because these are important to complement the national language.

“Therefore, we at the state branch level always work with various related agencies to ensure the desired goals can be achieved,” he said.

He said this at the 2024 Mahasiswa Kenyalang Speech Competition finals at the DBP Cultural Centre here, yesterday.

Abang Haliman and others take a memorable photo with the participants at the Kenyalang Student Voice Speech Competition 2024 at the DBP Cultural Center.

He said the competition held in conjunction with the 68th anniversary celebration of DBP Malaysia is a good platform to hone the talents and skills of participants.

In addition to providing exposure to communicate well in public, he said, this initiative is also important for inculcating creative thinking among students.

“It is our great hope that competitions like this will be held again in the future with the involvement of more participants,” he said.

A total of 12 students studying at UiTM Sarawak participated in the competition and the overall winner was Muhamad Atif Asyrul Jafar followed by Muhammad Haziq Awang Shahrin and Keith Ryan Ganyun Kennedy.
