BAU: A group of dedicated volunteers have been instrumental in the success of the Bau Youth Carnival 2024.

Comprising 26 individuals from various institutions across Sarawak, these young volunteers have contributed significantly to the three-day event (Nov 29 to Dec 1).

One such volunteer, 22-year-old Gabriel Jabing Muan, shared his experience, saying, “I decided to volunteer because I wasn’t busy, and it seemed like a great opportunity. I’m currently on a semester break and will resume my studies in February.”

Gabriel said the most invaluable volunteering experience was working with a diverse group of people.
“I’ve learned a lot about teamwork and event management, especially understanding the overall flow of the event,” he added.

Volunteers working on the events

Alifah Zulaikha M Azman, a 23-year-old final-year student from Sabah, seized the opportunity to volunteer as it allowed her to explore Sarawak.

“I hadn’t had the chance to travel much during my studies, so this was a perfect opportunity to experience different cultures and environments,” she said.

Alifah emphasised the importance of effective communication and adaptability.

“We need to be quick to respond to instructions and be prepared to work in challenging conditions, such as the heat,” she added.

Gabriel offered advice to aspiring volunteers: “Having a strong mental and physical health is crucial. Be prepared to face challenges and learn from experienced individuals.”

Alifah encouraged young people to actively participate in community events.

“Volunteering not only provides valuable experience but also exposes you to different perspectives and ways of working,” she said.

Nur Sufikah Abdul Razak, another 23-year-old volunteer, highlighted the cultural exchange aspect of the event.

“Communicating with people from different linguistic backgrounds has been a fascinating experience. It’s helped me improve my communication skills and understand different cultural nuances,” she said.

She urged young people to be bold and embrace opportunities to volunteer.

“Even if you feel uncertain at first, you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills that will benefit you in the future,” she added.
