SIBU: The contributions and sacrifices of senior citizens were celebrated at an elderly appreciation event in West Bank, where younger generations were urged to uphold filial piety and respect.
Tanjung Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang said the rich life experiences, resilience and selfless dedication of senior citizens are invaluable assets that should be cherished, learned from and passed on to future generations.
His speech was delivered by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief Cr Kevin Lau Kor Jie, who represented him as guest of honour at the “Love in Kwong Hua Warm Togetherness” Caring for the Elderly Celebration held at SMK Kwong Hua’s multipurpose hall in West Bank on Saturday night.
The event was jointly organised by the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Sungai Sadit Kanan, Ching Ang Methodist Church (SCAC) (Kwong Hua area), and the Chapel of Immaculate Conception Nan Ping Chong, Sungai Sadit.
Pang said it was the hard work and perseverance of the older generation that laid the foundation for today’s stable and harmonious society, enabling younger generations to grow up in a better environment.

Reflecting on the development of the Kwong Hua area, Sungai Sadit and the wider West Bank region, he said many elders had devoted their younger years to supporting their families and building the community, quietly dedicating some of the most precious years of their lives to the wellbeing of future generations.
Although he currently serves the N68 Tanjung Batu constituency, Pang said Sungai Sadit remains his hometown and holds a special place in his heart.
Upon learning about the appreciation event, he allocated funding to support the programme as a way of giving back to his hometown while promoting the values of filial piety and respect for the elderly.
Emphasising the Chinese saying, “Of all virtues, filial piety comes first”, Pang said respect for parents and elders is not only a cherished cultural value but also an important foundation for social harmony.
He noted that such events serve not only as celebrations but also as meaningful opportunities for the community to express gratitude and appreciation to senior citizens
Pang also stressed that community development depends not only on government policies and infrastructure but also on the active participation and support of local residents.
“Whether in Kwong Hua, West Bank or Sungai Sadit, continued unity and mutual support are essential for sustainable progress.
“I hope more young people will actively participate in community affairs and local development, working alongside the older generation to preserve the spirit of service and love for their hometown while contributing to the continued growth of the West Bank and Sungai Sadit areas, as well as Sarawak as a whole,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the SMK Kwong Hua board of directors, school administration, teachers and students for providing the venue and assisting with preparations, seating arrangements and logistical arrangements to ensure the event’s success.
Pang further thanked the three organising bodies for their cross-religious collaboration in making the event possible, describing it as a strong reflection of unity and cooperation within the community.
Meanwhile, Lau thanked one of the dinner sponsors, Ding Huong Chen, for supporting the event.
“Although Ding was unable to attend, he remains committed to education and community development, continuing the legacy of the late Datuk Ding Lian Cheon, former chairman of the Kwong Hua School Board, who was deeply devoted to education, public service and giving back to the community.
“His spirit of gratitude and dedication across generations deserves recognition,” he said.
Lau also expressed hope that the Kwong Hua community would continue to prosper in harmony and that Sungai Sadit and the West Bank areas would enjoy sustained growth, contributing further to Sarawak’s development.
The event attracted a large turnout of residents, senior citizens and families, creating a warm and appreciative atmosphere.
Various performances, including singing, dancing and musical presentations, were staged to honour parents and senior citizens and add to the celebratory mood.
Lau also sponsored ang pows for senior citizens aged 70 and above as a gesture of appreciation and care, while mini fans were distributed to children attending the event.
