KUCHING: Rugby is more than just a sport in Sarawak; it’s a community builder, fostering respect, teamwork, and inclusion.

Andrew Pritchard, a seasoned coach and referee from England, has been a key figure in the local rugby scene.

He regularly visits Kuching under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) program, working closely with the Kuching Rugby Football Club (KRFC).

“Rugby is about creating a global community, transcending borders,” Pritchard told Sarawak Tribune.
“It’s not just about the game itself, but the values it instills in players, coaches, and referees.”

He said the popularity of rugby in Malaysia, particularly among young people and women, was growing.
“Rugby is a fantastic game for everyone,” he said.

“It’s exciting to see more women and young players getting involved.”

Pritchard’s commitment to the sport extends beyond coaching.

He refereed during the KRFC Under-16 School 7s Rugby Tournament Dick Bentham Cup at Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field today (Dec 7).

“Refereeing helps me become a better coach,” he added.

“It allows me to understand the laws of the game and how they’re applied in real-time.”

Pritchard’s experience in the state highlights the unifying power of rugby.

“Rugby clubs are for everyone,” he said.

“Whether you’re a seasoned player or a complete beginner, you’ll be welcomed with open arms.”

As rugby continues to flourish, Pritchard’s contributions are helping to build a strong and inclusive community.

“The people of Sarawak are wonderful and welcoming,” he said.

“I’m truly honoured to be part of this rugby family.”
