MIRI:  Sarawak’s Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, delivered a speech on behalf of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the 15th Miri Christmas Parade at Miri City Fan on Saturday night, emphasizing the state’s record-breaking budget and economic progress.

The Premier’s message highlighted the Sarawak Government’s 2024 state budget of RM15.8 billion, a significant 16 percent increase compared to the RM13.6 billion allocated for 2023.

This surge is attributed to growing state revenues, which are projected to reach RM14.2 billion in 2025, following an anticipated RM14 billion collection in 2024.

“Let us pray that our revenue surpasses the RM14.2 billion mark, God willing,” the Premier stated, underlining Sarawak’s steady economic growth fueled by increased investments and strategic development spending.

Abang Johari attributed the state’s economic resilience to its focus on infrastructure development, public facilities enhancement, and foreign investments.

He pointed to Sarawak’s green economy policy as a key driver, positioning the state as a global leader in sustainable development.

“Our green economy policy has placed Sarawak at the forefront of the world’s pursuit towards addressing climate change. More foreign companies see Sarawak as an ideal destination for green investments due to our abundant resources and progressive policies,” he said.

The Premier also expressed optimism about the socio-economic benefits of increased revenue and investments.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving Sarawakians’ quality of life through various assistance programs, projects, and job opportunities, especially for youth.

“With more investments creating value for our resources, we can offer more job opportunities and boost household incomes. This ensures that Sarawak’s wealth benefits its people, reversing the irony of being a resource-rich state with pockets of poverty,” he stated.

In closing, Abang Johari urged unity among Sarawakians to collectively shape the state’s future. “If we stand together to help ourselves, I am confident we can determine our own destiny.”

The Miri Christmas Parade, an annual highlight, saw more than 40,000 crowds gathering to celebrate the season and reflect on the progress and aspirations of Sarawak.

More than 40,000 crowds from 18 participating churces attending at the parade.
