KUALA LUMPUR: Miri MP Chiew Choon Man expressed his appreciation to Education (KPM) Minister Fadhlina Sidek and the entire ministry for their dedicated efforts in addressing the issue of teacher shortages in Sarawak.
“This issue has long existed in Sarawak, and the collaboration between the Ministry and the Education Services Commission (SPP) has yielded highly encouraging results.
“The federal government has once again demonstrated its commitment to tackling key issues nationwide, including education in Sarawak, which serves as a pillar of national development.
“This collective effort reflects the principles of ‘Malaysia Madani’, emphasising the wellbeing of the people and social justice,” he said in his recent statement.
Chiew said that, for long-term solutions, KPM is focusing on recruiting teacher candidates through pre-service programmes such as the Bachelor of Teaching Degree Programme (PISMP); Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM); Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); and matriculation graduates in specialised fields to meet the needs of primary schools starting in 2024.
“This initiative aims to build a steady pipeline of qualified educators tailored to specific teaching demands.
“Additionally, KPM has established a teacher recruitment and placement committee to monitor changes in curriculum policies, programmes, and student enrolment that impact teacher needs.
“The ministry is also committed to ensuring a balanced approach to teacher recruitment and placement across schools under its jurisdiction,” he added.
Chiew remains committed to ensuring that education in Sarawak receives the attention and resources it deserves.
“I believe this collective effort will have a positive impact on our younger generation and position Sarawak as a model of educational excellence in Malaysia,” he said.
