SERIAN: Public Works Department (PWD) will continue to reinstate roads that are affected by erosion due to the flood situation happening in Sarawak.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that at the moment there are 148 cases of roads affected by floods, which PWD is currently working around the clock to restore.

“In addition, there are 75 cases of erosion at the slopes, and three cases of culvert issues.

“The PWD is on high alert and taking action to revive the connectivity. That is why we are thankful that Jalan Temalat in Kapit has been reinstated within six hours.

“We want to revive the connectivity as soon as possible, and this is important, so that it can be used by all road users to buy necessity items such as food and medicine,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters following his visit to the temporary relief centre (PPS) at Serian Community Hall here on Friday.
Regarding the king tide, scheduled to take place on the same day (January 31), Uggah said all relevant authorities remain on high alert, and more PPS will be opened if the trend of relocating flood victims continues to increase.
Uggah stated this is because since November of last year, until March, Sarawak has been prepared for the Northeast Monsoon.
“National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) has asked us to work together among the relevant authorities.

“We have the police, the firefighters working together with the resources that we have in assisting SDMC,” he added.
He then stated that members of the public who are willing to donate basic necessities such as food, clothes and medicine, can immediately head down to the nearest resident officer of SDMC centre.
“This is to ensure they can arrange for all of the assistance to be immediately sent to the temporary relief centres,” he added.
