SIBU: Pelawan assemblyman, Datuk Michael Tiang, has made public his record of service over the past four and a half years, involving various development and welfare initiatives with an allocation of more than RM31 million.
He said during the period, RM7.64 million had been allocated to upgrade the road network in his constituency, while RM3.15 million was used to strengthen community park facilities and recreational areas.
In addition, RM2.33 million was channeled for the construction of various public facilities, while another RM3.8 million was allocated for works to upgrade the drainage system to reduce flooding problems and improve the quality of local infrastructure.
In the education sector, Tiang said that RM3.62 million had been spent to upgrade school facilities, in addition to RM1.4 million channeled to help upgrade places of worship and cemetery facilities.
He also informed that his continuous efforts to secure government support had borne fruit when an allocation of RM5 million was approved for the renovation of the Melanau Cemetery in Bukit Aup.
“Development of infrastructure and the welfare of the people have always been my priority throughout my tenure as the representative of the people of Pelawan,” he said at the handover of Minor Rural Project (MRP) funds to 194 associations and organisations at the United Chinese Association’s premises here Saturday (June 13).
At the ceremony, a total of RM1.236 million in MRP funds was distributed to eligible associations and organisations.
On the House Repair Programme, he said that RM4.5 million had been allocated to repair 305 houses in the Pelawan area.
According to him, the programme would be expanded in the future so that all voters there could enjoy its benefits, even if they lived outside the constituency.
In another development, Tiang, who is also the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said he also played a role in helping to obtain government approval to cancel the five per cent sales tax on tyres.
He also managed to secure an allocation of RM3 million to solve the septic tank problem that plagued 320 households in the Rejang Park Housing Estate.
In addition, he helped apply for a special allocation from the Premier amounting to RM960,000 as a subsidy for residents who installed septic tanks privately, with each household receiving an assistance of RM3,000.
He said the Jalan Ling Kai Cheng and Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah areas, which have long faced flooding problems, have now seen various upgrading works to overcome the issue.
“The project to upgrade Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah to a dual carriageway has now reached 90.5 per cent progress. Several small components such as pedestrian walkways and drainage systems are still in the process of completion,” he said.
In an effort to encourage population growth, Tiang also continued to provide incentives to newlyweds and families who have children.
Each newlywed couple receive RM500 assistance, while each baby born receive RM300.
“Over the past four and a half years, a total of 527 newlywed couples and 1,019 babies have received these benefits with a total allocation of RM580,000,” he explained.
At the same time, he also channeled RM22,000 as welfare assistance to 22 teachers and established a Teachers’ Critical Illness Fund worth RM20,000 in 2025 to help educators who face serious health problems.
Tiang stressed his commitment to continue fighting for the development and welfare of the people of Pelawan.
