PUNJAB: Collaborative governance is a more effective method to face regional challenges and address the needs of modern society.

Malaysian senator Pele Peter Tinggom who made this point said collective action was therefore crucial in facing urgent issues.

According to him, these include climate change, economic instability, and digital transformation.

“While the region has some fast-growing economies, we also need to address inequality gaps, environmental degradation and climate change,” he said at the first Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Regional Conference for Asia and Southeast Asia in Pakistan, recently.

He explained that regional countries such as Pakistan, the Maldives, and Malaysia are exposed to the threat of extreme weather events, sea level rise and economic disruption due to climate change.

“The Southeast Asian region is considered one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change globally.

“In addition, these regions also face similar challenges, such as high dependence on the agricultural sector, infrastructure gaps and increasing inequality.

“Therefore, this challenge requires a more comprehensive collaborative approach,” he said.

In this context he said Malaysia’s role as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) this year would emphasise mutual growth and strengthening regional cooperation.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim vowed to give priority to inclusive growth, trade, and peace efforts throughout Asean.

“Malaysia will also ensure that regional cooperation remains the main foundation in overcoming challenges and driving sustainable development throughout the region,” he added.

The conference from Feb 6-10 will also discuss the commitment of member countries in strengthening diplomatic relations and promoting regional stability.
