KUCHING: The Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, in collaboration with Sarawak Skills, has launched the 2025 Sustainable Modern Agriculture Through Rural Technopreneurship (SMART) programme.

This initiative is part of the Rural ICT Training and Development Programme, aimed at empowering rural communities through exposure to smart agriculture and digital entrepreneurship.

A briefing and introductory session was officiated by Principal Assistant Secretary in the ministry, Atiqah Dolhan.

She said the programme is important to equip rural youth with skills aligned with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“We aim to transform the agricultural landscape of Sarawak by introducing modern farming techniques and strengthening the entrepreneurial mindset within rural communities.

“This programme goes beyond technical training – it represents a sustainable social and economic transformation for our rural areas,” she said.

The SMART programme will be conducted in three series, beginning in Kuching from June 16 to July 17, followed by Limbang and Miri.

Throughout the programme, participants will be introduced to advance agricultural technologies, guided through entrepreneurship development, and trained in essential ICT skills, equipping them to thrive in the digital era.

Sarawak Skills has been entrusted as the official training provider for the entire programme series.

With the implementation of the SMART programme, the ministry hopes to nurture a new generation of knowledgeable and competitive agro-entrepreneurs, positioning agriculture as a key driver of rural economic development in Sarawak.
