KUCHING: Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) officially launched its Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Week 2025 today at the CRC Auditorium, underscoring its commitment to workplace safety and the well-being of healthcare workers.

The event was officiated by Political Secretary to the Premier, Kho Teck Wan, who delivered the keynote address on behalf of Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“Occupational safety and health is not a luxury; it is an essential. It must be embedded in the very DNA of every healthcare institution,” she said in her speech on behalf of Dr Sim.

She reminded all staff that when a workplace is unsafe, it is not only employees who are at risk, but also patients and the public.

Kho, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women’s Chief, praised the hospital’s Environmental Safety and Health Committee and its leadership for organising the event calling their efforts a reflection of true dedication to staff welfare.

She also commended SGH for its proactive measures, including training programmes, emergency preparedness, and mental health support.

“When we think of safety, we become more aware of hazards. When we act safe, we take the right steps to prevent harm. And when we are safe, safety becomes a habit,” she said.

She encouraged all SGH staff to actively participate in the week’s planned activities, to foster a safety-first culture and promote shared responsibility.

“Let OSH Week 2025 be more than just a calendar event. Let it inspire each and every staff member to take ownership of their own safety and the safety of their colleagues,” she said.

Also present were Director of Sarawak General Hospital, Colonel Bersekutu (PA) Dr Ngian Hie Ung, and Head of the Occupational Safety and Health Unit, Sarawak General Hospital, Major Bersekutu (PA) Dr Anantha Kumar Rajendran.
