BETONG: Police arrested four locals for alleged involvement in the theft of a transformer belonging to Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) near Ferry Point Tanjung Lilin, Beladin on Wednesday.
The transformer, reported stolen at around 8:55 am, was valued at about RM30,000.
Acting on a tip-off, the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) arrested the male suspects, aged between 30 and 39, at several locations around Beladin.
Betong police chief DSP Rejali Angong confirmed that the arrests were made between 12:00 pm and 5:50 pm the next day (Thursday, July 17), and the stolen transformer had been recovered.
“Two of the suspects were found to have prior records related to drug offences.
“All four suspects have been remanded to facilitate further investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft,” he said.
Upon conviction, the offence provides for a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine, or both.
Rejali urged the public to report any information related to property crimes, especially thefts involving electric cables and telecommunications tower components, to the nearest police station for further action.
