KUCHING: Sarawak may not have a race track yet, but with growing interest in motorsport, the Virtual to Reality (V2R) programme is giving aspiring racers a chance to drive the famous Sepang Circuit, starting with sim racing.
Led by the Sarawak Esports Association (SESA) and Metadise Electronic Sports Club (MESC), the programme uses racing simulators to help Sarawakians build their skills and experience before they get a chance to drive on real tracks.
“Here in Sarawak, we have many motorsport enthusiasts, but not a single racing track. Most fans dream of driving on the Sepang Circuit — not to compete, but simply to feel what it is like,” said SESA president and Metadise director Afiq Fadhli Narawi.
He was speaking at the launch of the Initial M: Media SIM Racing Grand Prix, held at Metadise Sim Racing, here today (Aug 2).
Afiq said the V2R programme is more than just a platform for immersive experience, it is also designed as a talent development initiative with professional ambitions.
He also revealed that discussions are underway for a potential collaboration with Toyota Gazoo Racing Japan and Toyota Best Motors Corporation Sdn Bhd — a partnership that could offer a future path from sim racing to professional-level development.
“Of course, this would be a major milestone for motorsport in Sarawak. We are starting with the media, then moving to a corporate league, and finally launching a flagship programme.
“Our goal is to grow this into something sustainable, with strong industry support and sponsorship.”
The Initial M: Media SIM Racing Grand Prix brought together 17 journalists from nine media organisations, who competed in a qualifying round on simulated versions of Monza (Autodromo Nazionale Monza) and Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit.
The top seven teams will advance to the Final Time Attack Round scheduled for Aug 30, 2025.
