SARAWAK: A six-decade wait for better connectivity has finally ended for the residents of Nanga Lasi with the completion of a new bridge under the Sarawak Government’s ‘Projek Rakyat’ initiative.

The RM5-million project replaces an old suspension bridge previously accessible only to pedestrians, enabling motor vehicle access and improving daily commutes for over 1,500 residents in the rural Meluan constituency.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is set to officiate the bridge’s opening tomorrow (Saturday, Aug 9), marking another milestone in the state government’s effort to provide infrastructure for rural communities.

In July, Meluan Assemblyman, Rolland Duat Jubin, was reported as saying that the project took two years to complete and reflects Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) commitment to uplifting the wellbeing of people in remote areas.

He described the bridge as a “lifeline for development” that transforms the area and marks a new beginning for rural communities.

“This bridge brings major improvements to daily life. It connects homes to essential facilities like schools and clinics, which previously required travel via river or unpaved roads,” he said.

Rolland added that the bridge also facilitates the transport of agricultural produce to towns, potentially boosting local incomes and strengthening the area’s rural economy.

“The GPS government has never neglected rural areas. We will continue to push for more development projects to ensure rural communities benefit from the state’s progress,” he added.

The project was implemented by the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD), which reaffirmed its commitment to building quality infrastructure for the people in line with its ‘We Build For You’ slogan.
