KUCHING: Former Sarawak FA prolific striker, Muamer Salibasic, made an emotional return to familiar turf on Saturday, praising the “forever bond” with local fans despite Kelantan The Real Warriors’ 4-0 defeat to Kuching City FC in their League opener.

The Bosnian, who played a key role in helping Sarawak FA complete the 2013 Premier League season unbeaten and secure promotion to the top flight, is now serving as assistant head coach to Kelantan’s The Real Warriors FC.

“It’s nice to be here again after almost five years. The atmosphere around the field was very good. It wasn’t the best match for us, but Kuching played a good game,” said Salibasic to reporters after the match.

Salibasic, who remains a fan favourite in Sarawak, said the warmth of the home crowd still resonates with him.

“I still call them our fans because I have some history here and we made that connection together. It will be forever – I hope so. It feels good to feel that.”

The 39-year-old enjoyed some of the best years of his career in Sarawak colours, scoring crucial goals during the state team’s rise in Malaysian football.

His return to the Sarawak State Stadium brought back fond memories for both player and supporters alike, even if the outcome on the pitch favoured the home side.

Kuching City FC, boasting a refreshed squad this season, impressed with their dominant performance.

Goals from Joao Pedro, a brace by Ronald Ngah, and Ramadhan Saifullah sealed the emphatic victory.

While Kelantan will be looking to bounce back in their next fixture, Salibasic’s homecoming was a reminder of the lasting bonds between players and the communities they once represented.
